13 TAKEAWAYS FROM COTERIE AND ACCESSORIESTHESHOW NYC

Last week, our step counters worked overtime as we scoured the Javits Center at Coterie and AccessoriesTheShow to find the most cutting-edge introductions for Spring ’18. Bags were decidedly unpretentious, crafted from natural materials or sporting ironic phrases reminiscent of disposable shopping bags. Large totes were juxtaposed with micro cellphone bags and (dare we call them fanny packs?) hands-free silhouettes. Cats dethroned dogs as the No.1 animal motif on just about everything, and cherries outnumbered last season’s pineapple. Jewelry was multifunctional, like a crown that can double as a hatband, and Lucite is the new It material. Below, our 13 favorite finds from the shows:

IRA SALLES

1. Rope and bungee are an up-and-coming motif

Macrame is a construction to look out for, but material choices surprised us. Instead of jute, some designers opted for nautical cord accented with rope and bungee handles.

KENDALL + KYLIE

2. 2018 is going to be a knockout

The Jenner sisters are taking on the year with a one-two punch. These functional boxing gloves are a kitschy accessory that’s guaranteed to blow out at retail.

MAGNA BLUE

3. Spring is all about transparency

No, we’re not talking politics. Fisherman bags had a street-style moment this spring, and brands are all aboard for next year with offerings in natural and nautical hues.

STREET LEVEL

4. The basket bag has only just begun

It may have started with Cult Gaia, but the straw bag is not going anywhere. Structural wicker basket bags took an array of shapes, from this sleek rectangular basket to circular constructions and tall cylinders.

YOCHI

5. Lucite is getting luxe

The future is clear, literally. From lucite jewelry (earrings, bangles, pendants, you name it) to perspex footwear, the invisible trend is about to make a statement.

ALICE & OLIVIA

6. Cheap bags are chic

Did you ever think cheap grocery bags would have a designer moment? Unstructured handle bags are going to be everywhere but the bodega in 2018.

CAM CI CAM CA

7. Your hat needs some bling, too

Housed in the Pool show, this crown goes double duty as a hat accessory.

MAGNA BLUE

8. It’s all about the destination

Travel is stealing a large proportion of disposable income as consumers demand experiences, so totes, pouches and other items that get women excited for their trip are key. Bonus points if she will Instagram it when she arrives.

PRIVEE SHOWROOM

9. Cherries are the new pineapple

Keep up… pineapples are passe; cherries, watermelons and flamingos are SS18’s newest treats and motifs. Embroidery is also updating sequins in many cases.

OMG! ACCESSORIES

10. Cats are cool

Not a cat person? Too bad. Felines are slinking into fashion and it’s best to give them some love.

11. The eyes …and lips…have it

The evil eye has gone glam, so look for lashes, sequins, holograms and pearls dressing up this classic talisman. Lips are also gaining traction, driven by Surrealistic and Pop Art movements.

OMG! ACCESSORIES

12. Belt bags are hip

Do. Not. Call. These. Fanny. Packs. We’re all about the “hipster” now. Hands-free is the way to go.

JULES KAE

13. Phone pouches go one-size-fits-all

Designers have given up launching new phone cases every time Apple and Samsung grace us with their newest phone size (and camera viewer placement). One-size-fits-all pouches not only fit a phone, but also leave room for a credit card, lipstick and business cards. Consider these the ultimate Trade Show bag.
